What
is a domain name and do I need one?
Every web site has an address on the Internet, which is called
the URL (Uniform Resource Locator). For example, our URL is
http://www.gdisinc.com. A URL is made up of the domain name
("gdisinc") and an extension (".com"). Other
extensions include: .net, .org, .biz, .us, .gov, and .edu. All
Whois has a domain lookup function you can use to see who owns
a particular domain name if it has already been registered.

Once
you know that the domain name you want is available, it must
be purchase it in order to use it. However, we recommend that
you do not purchase the name until we've chosen a host for
your site. This is because the host can often obtain the name
for you, thereby eliminating the cost of transferring the
name to the host. A domain name costs $50 a year.
